Autumn League 2026 · Season preview

Headline Bids, Auction Steals and the Race for Opening-Night Supremacy

The gavel has fallen, the squads are settled, and the opening fixtures are rapidly approaching. The high-stakes Autumn League auction has left players and supporters debating the ultimate preseason question: did the bidding produce a clear frontrunner, or has it set the stage for a completely unpredictable competition?

Drawing on the 2025 pairs-format records, final auction values, squad composition and the early clues provided by the opening practice match, here is the form guide ahead of Opening Night.

The Heavyweight Signings

Every title challenge begins with squad building, and this year’s auction produced several major statements:

  • Rohith Shylendra — Smashers, 21 points: The crown jewel of the auction and one of its highest-ever bids. Rohith led the 2025 batting standings with an imposing 647 runs, explaining why Smashers were prepared to commit such a large share of their kitty to secure him.
  • Navin — Strikers, 18 points: A genuine dual threat whose record of 393 runs and 34 wickets makes him the foundation of the Strikers’ all-round blueprint.
  • Mohan and Visagn — Challengers, 10 points each: A calculated double investment by Challengers. Mohan brings experience and composure, backed by 355 runs and 13 wickets, while Visagn offers explosive scoring power after recording 425 runs at a strike rate of 174.18.

Squad-by-Squad Breakdown

Challengers: The Tactical Blueprint

Captain Mahanth Sharma has constructed what may be the competition’s most balanced squad. His own record of 552 runs and a league-leading 36 wickets provides an exceptional two-discipline foundation, supported by Visagn, Mohan, Abhijit Thuse with 258 runs, and strike bowler Pratik Panchal.

  • The Release-Market Value: Prem and Ashish B initially cost Strikers a combined 19 points, but Challengers secured the pair for just eight points after their release. Prem brings a proven return of 243 runs and 18 wickets, while Ashish B adds another potentially valuable option to an already well-balanced squad.
  • The X-Factor: Kunal. He arrives without a historical league ranking, but starred with both bat and ball in the practice-match victory over Strikers. If that performance was an indication of what is to come, his six-point signing could prove to be one of the auction’s smartest investments.

Strikers: Firepower and All-Round Depth

If Challengers are built around balance, Strikers appear to possess the deepest collection of established all-rounders. Navin is joined by Sathyan Mohan, who recorded 375 runs and 27 wickets, and captain Awaiz Usman, whose contribution of 360 runs and 20 wickets gives the side another proven two-discipline performer.

  • The Bargain Hunters: Mohammed Imran’s 220 runs and 22 wickets came at five points, while Pranay’s 198 runs and 13 wickets cost only three. Both signings provide considerable evidence-based value.
  • Under the Radar: Vinod D, signed directly at the two-point minimum, quietly claimed 17 wickets last season, including best figures of 4/28. Alongside Bijoy and his 19 wickets, he gives Strikers even greater bowling depth than their headline names initially suggest.

Smashers: The Highest Individual Ceiling

Captain Abhilash Anand committed 42% of his starting kitty to Rohith Shylendra—one of the boldest decisions of the auction. It gives Smashers a player capable of changing a match almost single-handedly, but also places importance on the contributions surrounding him.

  • The Supporting Cast: Srivatsan brings 306 runs, Abhilash contributed 269, Rohit Srivastava claimed 17 wickets, and Vasu arrives with 13 wickets after joining from Strikers for only two points.
  • Championship Pedigree: Abhilash enters the competition having captained his side to the Winter League title. That experience of managing pressure and guiding a team through a championship campaign could be particularly valuable as he builds this new squad around the auction’s biggest individual signing.

Chargers: The Stealth Wildcards

No auction bidding, no public price tags—and therefore no easy way to judge them against the other three squads. Chargers were assembled away from the auction under captain Thanvilin Thattakath, who brings a strong personal record of 281 runs and 20 wickets, including best figures of 4/33.

  • Dark-Horse Potential: Jomy provides an established bowling option, while both Jomy and Joju possess the ability to change a match on their day. Their squad may be harder to measure, but that unpredictability could become one of their greatest strengths.

Chargers enter the season with less public scrutiny and fewer obvious auction narratives. That does not necessarily make them weaker—it may simply make them the side opponents understand least.

The Release-Market Shift

The forced-release rounds may ultimately prove as important as the headline bidding. Several players attracted significant early valuations before becoming available at considerably lower prices:

PlayerOriginal Team and PriceFinal Team and PricePrice Change
Sathyan MohanSmashers — 10 pointsStrikers — 7 points−3
PranayChallengers — 8 pointsStrikers — 3 points−5
PremStrikers — 10 pointsChallengers — 4 points−6
Ashish BStrikers — 9 pointsChallengers — 4 points−5
VasuStrikers — 4 pointsSmashers — 2 points−2

These players now have the opportunity to demonstrate that their original valuations were closer to their true worth than their eventual prices. If they reproduce their established performances, the release market—not the opening bidding—could end up deciding the championship.

The Preseason Verdict

Every squad has a credible route to the title. Challengers may be the best balanced, Smashers possess the competition’s most imposing individual match-winner, and Chargers remain the fascinating unknowns.

But if we must select a narrow preseason favourite, Strikers receive the smallest of edges. Their collection of proven all-rounders, wicket-taking depth and value signings gives them several different ways to influence a match—and perhaps the strongest protection against an off-night from any one player.

That is only the preseason view. Will the historical numbers translate into this competition? Will the auction’s biggest investments justify their prices? Could a released player become the signing who decides the title? Or will Chargers upset every prediction and emerge from the shadows?

Who are your favourites—and which player do you believe will prove to be the signing of the season?

We wish all four captains, every player, the officials and everyone supporting the competition the very best for the season ahead. May the Autumn League be competitive, respectful, unpredictable and memorable.

The squads are ready. The arguments can stop. Now the cricket decides.
